Recent Achievements
- UNICEF and the Lakes State Ministry of Health agreed to fund modest salaries and medicinal allotments for Akot (2024)
- Dr. China Akot, a recent medical school graduate and native of Akot, committed to returning to rehabilitate the Akot Medical Mission (November 2024)
- The U.S. nonprofit, Hope and Health Akot South Sudan (HHASS), was created to resurrect the medical mission (December 2024)
- A small team of U.S. volunteers, led by Dr. Jeffrey Deal and Daven Acker, visited the site in April 2025; meetings were conducted with community and governmental leaders to secure commitments to rebuild a sustainable facility
- A survey of the existing facility was conducted; a team of two dozen Kenyan and local workers refurbished the facility; during the spring and summer of 2025, the electrical system was restored, a satellite internet system was installed, and, with assistance from Water Mission (https://watermission.org), the water system was restored; facility structures were cleaned, repaired, and painted, including the installation of new doors and screened windows; one hundred mango trees were planted on the perimeter of the facility to provide shade and fresh fruit
- The facility was reopened in June 2025; over 2,100 patients received care in the first month of operation
- Ancillary businesses (internet café, rental of the brickmaking machine) have been created to support sustained operations
- A Memorandum of Understanding was signed with the South Sudanese Ministry of Health (August 2025), ceding administrative authority of the facility to HHASS
- Agreements were reached with community leaders to institute service fees for patients who are able to pay, supporting sustained operations (September 2025)
- Staff housing was built to accommodate two resident HHASS physicians (September 2025)
- Forty hospital beds were acquired to accommodate patients (September 2025)
- A community celebration welcomed Dr. China Kuot as Medical Director (October 2025)
- A training program for 15 nurse’s aides was established to augment staffing in Akot and to expand the pool of qualified medical professionals in South Sudan (January 2026)
